Tug assistance in the port of Hamburg
Modern merchant ships are defined by their
excellent manoeuvre qualities, (bow thruster, stern thruster
and twin screw system, variable pitch propeller) and can
carry out many port manouvers independently. There is
no general obligation to accept tug assistances in the
port of Hamburg. The decision lies with the captain and
is dependent on the vessel’s size, available berths,
weather conditions and the knowledge of the port area.
The harbour pilot advises the captain of the vessel in
this regard. The overall majority of the captains of large
vessels make use of the assistance offered by tugboats
due to safety reasons. In certain cases the port authorities
can order the acceptance of tugboats.
